Phuket is ideally explored by scooter. Coastal routes, viewpoints, temples and the old town: here are four easy routes to do in half a day or a day, starting from our shops in Patong and Bang Tao. The durations are indicative and depend on traffic and your stops.
In short
- South Loop (Patong → Promthep Cape): the most beautiful, ideal at the end of the day for the sunset.
- Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and Old Town : The Culture Day.
- North-west coast (Bang Tao → Patong): beaches and views of the sea.
- Wild North (Bang Tao → Mai Khao): calm beaches and a national park.
1. The southern loop: Patong → Promthep Cape
From Patong, take the coastal road south: Karon, Kata and then Kata Noi. Stop at Karon Viewpoint, which offers a panorama of three bays. Continue to Nai Harn, one of the island’s most beautiful beaches, then climb to Promthep Cape for the sunset. Plan a half-day with stops along the way.
Our advice: The route features beautiful climbs and tight turns. An ADV 350, a TMAX or an X-ADV make the ride much more enjoyable for two people.
2. Big Buddha, Wat Chalong and the old city
Climb to the Big Buddha, the large white statue that dominates the south of the island: the road is steep but the view is spectacular. Descend to Wat Chalong, the most important temple in Phuket, then head to Phuket Town to wander through the old town and its colorful Sino-Portuguese houses. Consider wearing clothing covering shoulders and knees for the temples.
3. The northwest coast: from Bang Tao to Patong
Starting from our shop in Bang Tao, head south along the coast: Surin, the viewpoint of Laem Singh, then Kamala and finally Patong. The route alternates between beaches, coves and panoramic views of the Andaman Sea. Perfect for an afternoon break.
4. The wild north: from Bang Tao to Mai Khao
Head north via Layan, Nai Thon and Nai Yang, to the long beach of Mai Khao in the Sirinat National Park. Less crowded than the rest of the island, this part of the island is ideal for escaping the crowds. On Mai Khao, the beach is located near the airport: planes fly low over the swimmers.
Tips for your walks
- Driving on the left side of the road is common in Thailand; a helmet is mandatory for the driver and passenger.
- Leave with the full tank and keep your documents (passport, license, international permit) with you.
- Avoid driving at night on mountain roads that you are unfamiliar with.
- During the rainy season (roughly from May to October), plan to bring an umbrella and slow down on wet roads.
- The mileage is unlimited on the island; to leave Phuket, ask us for permission before leaving.
